How To: Stay Committed

"How Not to Die" is an informational book that discusses both plant-based foods that protect against disease and animal-based foods that contribute to disease. Disclaimer: None of the documentaries or books shown or mentioned are endorsed by this blog.

We’ve covered many of the ins and outs of veganism thus far, but what might be the hardest part of the whole lifestyle has yet to be discussed: actually staying committed to it.

While some people decide veganism isn’t for them after giving it a try, others who genuinely want to stick with the lifestyle sometimes end up straying from it for a variety of reasons, according to The Minimalist Vegan blog. A few of these reasons include vegans losing motivation to put effort into what they eat, not knowing enough different vegan meals to cook and foods to eat and becoming discouraged when the lifestyle becomes inconvenient.

No matter why any dedicated vegan might struggle to stay committed, though, there’s a multitude of resources that can help in restoring motivation to live a life sans animal products and by-products.

Documentaries:

A number of documentaries serve as a simple way to remind people of why they went vegan in the first place.

“Earthlings” and “Vegucated” will be most effective for those who use their vegan efforts to fight against animal cruelty and advocate for animal rights. “Earthlings” focuses on industries’ dependence on animals for economic profit, while “Vegucated” follows three individuals from different backgrounds as they adopt a vegan diet for six weeks to learn what the lifestyle is all about.

For those who went vegan primarily for the health benefits, “Forks over Knifes” and “What the Health” provide a reminder of all the ways that plant-based diets contribute to health. Both documentaries examine and support the claim that diets free of animal products can prevent, or even reverse, several debilitating diseases.

Lastly, “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” and “Food Choices” highlight the advantages of veganism for the environment for those who practice the lifestyle to contribute to the sustainability of the earth. The documentaries uncover the toll that the production of animal products takes on the environment and how food choice impacts the planet, respectively.

Jess Grady, who made the switch from a vegetarian lifestyle to veganism more than two years ago, turned to documentaries for support during her transition.

“I would watch documentaries like “Vegucated” and “Food Choices” when I was craving non-vegan foods, and after watching them, I was always reminded of why I wanted to become vegan in the first place,” she said.

Informational Books:

A collection of books will also do the trick to for vegans looking to renew their commitment to the lifestyle.

Though they are both somewhat in-depth, “How Not to Die” and “The China Study” each explain how vegan foods can be used to control health in their own ways. “How Not to Die” is broken into sections that describe what plant-based foods should be eaten to protect against different diseases and what animal-based foods should be avoided in order to prevent different diseases. “The China Study” describes the findings of the most comprehensive study ever completed on the relationship between diet and disease.

“I don’t ever question my vegan lifestyle, but if I did, “How Not to Die” would definitely recommit me to the diet,” Grady said. “After reading the book myself, I’m not sure how anyone could ever read it without questioning their dietary choices.”

Cookbooks:

Aside from the more informational books, vegan cookbooks are also a helpful source for vegans who need a little support.

Specifically, the “World Vegan Feast” cookbook contains 200 nutritious vegan recipes from over 50 countries, and the “Isa Does It” cookbook supplies vegans with healthy plant-based recipes that can be made in under 30 minutes with inexpensive and readily available ingredients at most grocery stores.

No matter the reasons why a vegan may struggle to stay committed to the lifestyle from time to time, there are so many resources that not only promote veganism, but also connect with viewers and readers to freshly inspire their ambitions to stay vegan.
